Mary Smith Brown was Dr. Robert Smith's great-aunt who died in 2004 at the age of 101. This scholarship is awarded to a Mansfield High School senior who attended Erma Nash Elementary School and who has demonstrated high ideals and hard work in completing high school. It was established on the occasion of Mrs. Brown's 95th birthday.
Mary Smith Brown was born September 7, 1902 in Mansfield, Texas. She was the granddaughter of C.A. Smith, a well-known early settler of this area, and the daughter of Jim and Stella House Smith. The land which her family owned extended from near downtown Mansfield all the way to present Highway 287. Erma Nash Elementary is located on land which formerly belonged to the Smith family. Mrs. Brown attended school in Mansfield and went on to attend college at Trinity University where she earned a B.A., and she later earned a B.S. from Teachers College in Denton. She studied at Columbia University in New York, and she earned a Masters Degree in Math from TCU.
The Mary Smith Brown Scholarship is included in the Multi-Scholarship Fund of the Mansfield ISD. For more information, contact one of the school counselors at Mansfield High School. An engraved plaque showing the names of all the recipients of this award is on display at the office of Dr. Robert A. Smith, 126 N Main in Historic Downtown Mansfield.
